Casual Poet Library is a community-funded shared library in the heartlands of Singapore. It’s run entirely by 180 individuals who each rent a bookshelf and volunteer librarians keep the space open and accessible.
How we found the perfect home for the library
while hunting for a shop to house our shared library, I came to Alexandra Village on my friend @jaunskl’s tip. She had walked past an empty shop and thought it might be suitable. The space turned out to be perfect and I knew almost instantly that this was the one. But I felt the surroundings looked really familiar, like I’d been here before. Then my eyes landed on @rookies.coffee two shops away and I was shocked, because a memory came back to me.
A few months ago I visited @rookies.coffee with @amosfett. It was my first time there and I loved the place. I also noticed there was something special about the neighbourhood. Looking out of the cafe I could see a bird shop. The chatter of the birds filled the hood, and somehow I felt uplifted by their joy. Near them there was a mysterious-looking antique shop selling old cassettes and furniture from the 1920s. Sunlight filtered through the leaves of the tree outside. It was all old and beautiful and ordinary. As I looked through the glass door of the cafe I felt an affection for everything I saw, so I turned to Amos and said, “If I ever open a bookshop, I wanna open it here!”
Somehow now I had ended up in the same hood, standing in front of an empty shop that I was hoping to turn into a bookshop, two shops away from the cafe I was in when I said to a friend, “If I ever wanna open a bookshop, I wanna open it here.”
If this is a coincidence it’s an annoyingly cool one, and it makes my life easier because the universe seems to be telling me, “You’re on the right path!”
